Desserts By Night – Edgewater

Desserts By Night is an afternoon tea and night time cafe inspired by Asian dessert houses. But instead of black sesame soup, tong yuan, and ice kachang, you’ll be wowed by their French-styled desserts.

In 2010, westside local Jack La opened Desserts by Night at Edgewater Shopping Centre after realising that there was a gap in the market for a dedicated dessert eatery in the area.

In 2012, he got so busy that he convinced his brother Danny, who was then working in logistics, to help out in the business.

For the past ten years, Desserts By Night has been fulfilling the sweet dreams of customers in the west. The bright and spacious cafe serves over 1000 desserts a week—that’s a lot of happy people!

“Our family used to live in Maidstone and that’s why we wanted to do business locally,” explains Danny. “Now our customers travel from all around the west, even as far as Melton and Point Cook.”

If you have a sweet tooth then be warned—it will be hard to choose what to order!

Danny recommends his favourite dessert, and best-selling dish, the sticky date pudding. The home-style dessert is elevated to an artful confection with a sprinkling of macadamia nuts and vanilla crumb, swirls of caramel mascarpone and lightly toasted swiss meringue, and finished off with a quenelle of vanilla bean ice cream.

The artistic presentation of this classic comfort food wouldn’t be out of place in a fine dining restaurant—and that’s why the kitchen on-site produces around 150 serves of sticky date pudding a week.

Other dishes – including their waffles, brownies, pannacotta—combine Eastern and Western flavours and are equally artful on the plate.

The business’ success means that Jack and Danny opened a second site in Springvale in 2018. The grand plan is to have a location in Melbourne’s north and south and to expand interstate as well, while still maintaining its roots as a family business.
