Latin Food and Wines

Annie Hartinger may be Filipino – but as the owner of Latin Foods and Wines, she is Latino at heart.

“There are actually lots of similarities between Filipino and Latin food,” Annie laughs. “We love dulce de leche, tres leches cake and empanadas just the same. More importantly, we love gathering together for good food.”

Formerly known as Foxy Fox

Annie came to Australia as a seventeen-year-old and worked in logistics, food importing and customer service before buying the Maidstone cafe, formerly known as Foxy Fox, in March 2020.

As a local single mum with two children to support, she wanted to be her own boss so that she could be hands-on with her kids, work flexible hours and be close to home and school.

However, the series of lockdowns made it challenging to run the cafe. In order to sustain the business through difficult times, she decided to pivot it to become Latin Foods and Wines.

Large Latin population

“There is a large Latin population around the area and I thought that I could really serve that community by offering Latin Foods and Wines’ products right here,” Annie explains.

The best-selling products are the empanadas, of which are staples in Latin America. Annie’s particular favourite is the Cuban pork.

Jack-of-all-trades

Annie’s vision for Latin Foods and Wines is for it to be embedded into the Maidstone community. She is the jack-of-all-trades in her business, so you’ll regularly see her smiling face making coffee or in the kitchen. Her children sometimes help out behind the counter too.

“I love talking to people and we really get to know our customers and it’s like they become part of our family. We have all these regulars that drop in after going to the gym, the dance school, the jujitsu studio and our other business neighbours. I think our customers enjoy coming here because of our warm customer service and of course the Latin food.”
